BIO
Axel Lazzari is a Ph.D candidate in Anthropology at Columbia University. He received an M.A. in Social Anthropology from the Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, and a B.A in Anthropological Sciences from Universidad de Buenos Aires, Argentina. Lazzari is a researcher and lecturer in Ethnology and Ethnography at the Instituto de Antropología (Universidad de Buenos Aires). He also teaches at the universities of San Martín and Córdoba. He has published articles about political clientelismo, the indigenous ethnohistory of the Pampa, memory and monuments, the history of Argentinean anthropology, indigenist politics and legislation. Currently, Lazzari is doing research on the process of (re)emergence of the Rankülche indigenous people, focusing on the breaks and displacements of the ethnic (self)recognition that take place in the cultural arenas of memory, language, and the creation of indigenous organizations.

ABSTRACT
No More Dead Bodies: Mediation and Interruption in the Recognition of Ranquel Identity
This essay is based on my research on indigenous (re)emergence in an Argentinean province and on the records of an ethnographic event that involved the restitution of the skull of a Ranquel chief. My interpretation focuses on the body, death, the fetish and the phantom and is intended as a contribution toward a way of studying and participating in the ongoing recognition of identities that goes beyond a certain social constructivism.
