While travelling through Patagonia I found myself captivated by these altars, by their construction and placement. They are located at the bends of roads, memorializing accidents and people who have been killed. Those who wish to remember their loved ones build them and return there to pray. These silent, ingenious, and austere images that emerge from the solitude of the South invite one to request miracles, which they appear willing to grant. Perhaps the greatest miracle is their very existence, there, to the far South of everything.
